Digital Photography 3

Week 1

In our first session, we'll take the time to go over any methods and niches that interest students in preparation for our shooting “in the field”. Extension tubes, Flash photography, slow shutter speed, camera-phone-sync, this is where we will finally have time to go over such granular elements of modern photography.

Homework: Practice methods learned in class and familiarize yourself with any new gear.

Week 2

Our second session takes us to downtown Sarasota. Here, we'll apply classroom knowledge to capture the essence of urban landscapes, focusing on composition, lighting, and storytelling. We will meet at an agreed upon location, likely near the public library and go from there.

Homework: Review your work, resisting the urge to delete in-camera.

Week 3

In the third session, we'll immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Participants will gain hands-on experience with macro photography, using extension tubes or macro lenses to capture detailed images of flora and fauna. We'll also explore techniques for working with natural light, including the use of reflectors and diffusers to control exposure and contrast.

Homework: Review your work, resisting the urge to delete in-camera.

Our final session is dedicated to reviewing and critiquing the images captured during the field trips. We will work on culling and presenting our image series’ to highlight the best of our work, learning to find emergent themes and stories. Development is a vital part of the process, even if your style lends itself to less editing. Students should leave with a solid foundation in how to present their work either online or in person.
